Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

AMS is an illness that affects the person while travelling, trekking, and hiking at higher altitudes usually above 3000 meters. You will be affected by AMS when your body can’t acclimatize to lower level of oxygen and reduced level of air pressure at higher altitudes. It affects you most when you ascend too fast or you have never been to higher altitudes.

Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  • Headache or dizziness
  • Shortness of breath with exertion
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rapid pulse rate

Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  • Properly acclimatize your body in higher altitudes (After 3000 meters).
  • Do climb too fast. Climb the mountain gradually.
  • Don’t drink Alcohol, Sleeping pills and Smoking.
  • Drink lots of liquids around 3 to 4 liters a day, Drink coffee, soup, juice etc just fill yourself with fluid.
  • Take rest in time.
  • Do not trek alone.
  • Follow what your group leader and guides says.
  • Descent to lower altitudes if mild symptoms are getting bad.
  • Keep yourself warm and avoid getting cold.
